Privacy Policy
Effective July 17, 2026 · thepantry.app
The Pantry is a kitchen-management app built by a family, for families. The short version: your kitchen data belongs to you, we don't sell it, and we collect only what the app needs to work.
What we collect
- Account info: a username, display name, email address, and a securely hashed password. Your email is used for password resets and account notices, nothing else.
- Kitchen data: the inventory items, recipes, meal plans, grocery lists, and preferences you create. This is the product; it is stored so the app can show it back to you and the people you share your kitchen with.
- Billing: payments are processed by Stripe. Your card number never touches our servers. We store only your Stripe customer reference and subscription status.
Receipt and barcode scans
- Receipt photos are sent to an AI service (Anthropic) once, to read the items, and are then discarded. We do not store receipt images, and receipts are not used to build any advertising or purchasing profile.
- Barcodes are looked up against public food databases (Open Food Facts, USDA FoodData Central). Only the barcode number is sent.
What we don't do
- We do not sell or rent your data to anyone.
- We do not run third-party advertising or ad trackers.
- We do not read your kitchen data except to operate the service or debug a problem you report.
Sharing within the app
If you invite family members to your kitchen, they can see the shared inventory, meal plan, and grocery list. If you choose to share a recipe with the community, it becomes visible to other users under your display name. Both are your choice, always.
Data retention and deletion
Your data stays for as long as you have an account. To delete your account and its data, email us at the address below and we will remove it. Encrypted backups age out on a rolling schedule.
Security
Traffic is encrypted with HTTPS everywhere. Passwords are stored hashed (bcrypt). Servers are firewalled, patched automatically, and monitored.
Children
The Pantry is a general-audience household tool and is not directed at children under 13. Accounts are created by adults in the household.
Changes
If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we will note it here with a new effective date.
